Low Back Pain
Fundamentals of Healing from Low Back Pain
There are two basic aspects to healing from most uncomplicated back pain conditions. These are loosening and balancing muscular and fascial compensations, followed by strengthening the muscles and maintaining them with a good home exercise regimen.
Loosening and balancing the musculature and fascia can be accomplished with a large variety of soft tissue and joint manipulative procedures, as well as through regular stretching programs like yoga. Generally some combination of a variety of approaches will provide the most rapid and effective changes.
Stabilization exercises can begin as early as at the first visit. As care progresses, specific rehab exercises are introduced and later a home care exercise regimen. This progression facilitates rapid healing, as well as a stable and strong back to reduce the possibility of flare-ups and chronic pain in the future.
Aside from the basics, other treatments may be added based on the specifics of each individual patient's condition. These may include: low back traction, therapeutic kinesiotaping (taping), balance (proprioceptive) training, ice and/or heat applications, and others.
More complex or difficult cases may also be referred for concurrent care at other clinics for one-on-one physical therapy, acupuncture, and/or further medical evaluation.
